Prostate Drugs - Just What Those Prostate Drugs Like?

Okay, so you haven't had a decent nights sleep in the past 4 years, you routinely leave the mens room still soiling your underwear slightly and your sex life is, well ... it's not.

Something has to be done.

Natural prostate remedies or man-made prostate drugs? Which to choose? Let's take a look at the drugs, what they do, their potential side effects, and how long they take to work.

There are two types of prostate drugs for treating your prostate problem;

1) 5-alpha reductase inhibitors, (commonly known as finasteride) these actually shrink the prostate in volume, and there are a few; Proscar, Propecia, Fincar, Finpecia, Finax, Finast, Finara, Finalo, Prosteride, Gefina.

2) Alpha blockers, they relax the muscles at the neck of the bladder and make urination easier. Here are some that are used, Cardura, Flomax, Hytrin, Regitine, Minipress, and Uroxatral .

However, there are large quantity of side-effects that men experience with these prostate drugs, and one of the things you'll find if you surf the forums on the internet, is that many men experience problems that are irreversible. You just don't know what's going to happen until it happens. To be fair, some of these side effects of these prostate drugs will decrease over time, but in other cases they won't. To be honest, not my cup of tea.

So here's the list of side effects of these prostate drugs;

- Cardura - COMMON - Back pain, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, feeling of a whirling motion, flu-like symptoms, headache, indigestion, lightheadedness, nasal congestion, nausea, pain, stomach pain, swelling, tiredness.

- Floxmax - COMMON - Dizziness, unusual weakness, drowsiness, trouble sleeping, or runny nose may occur.

SERIOUS - fainting, vision changes, sexual problems (difficulty ejaculating, decreased interest in sex), fastheartbeat. in the unlikely event you have a painful, prolonged erection lasting 4 hours or more, stop using this drug and seek immediate medical attention or permanent problems could occur. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include: rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, trouble breathing.

- Hytrin - COMMON; Difficult or labored breathing, dizziness, headaches, heart palpitations, light-headedness upon standing, nausea, pain in the arms and legs, sleepiness, stuffy nose, swollen wrists and ankles, weakness.

LESS COMMON - Anxiety, back pain, blurred vision, bronchitis, conjunctivitis (inflamed eyes), constipation, decreased sex drive, depression, diarrhea, dimmed vision, dry mouth, facial swelling, fainting, fever, flu or cold symptoms (cough, sore throat,

runny nose), fluid retention, frequent urination, gas, gout, impotence, inability to hold urine, increased heart rate, indigestion, inflamed sinuses, insomnia, irregular heartbeat, itching, joint pain and inflammation, low blood pressure, muscle aches, nasal inflammation, nervousness, nosebleed, numbness or tingling, painful lasting erection, pain in the abdomen, chest, neck, or shoulder, rash, ringing in the ears, severe allergic reaction, sweating, urinary tract infection, vertigo, vision changes, vomiting, weight gain.

- Regitine - Acute and prolonged hypotensive episodes, tachycardia, and cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat). In addition, weakness, dizziness, flushing, orthostatic hypotension, nasal stuffiness, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may occur.

- Minipress - Dizziness, drowsiness, head pain, visible water rretention, heart throbbing or pounding, dry mouth, low energy, nervous, not feeling well. SERIOUS; angina, continued painful erection, trouble breathing, feel like throwing up, frequent urination

- Uroxatral - Dizziness/lightheadedness or headache may occur, decreased sexual ability occurs, unusual fatigue/weakness, joint pain, trouble breathing, stomach/abdominal pain, back pain. SERIOUS: unusually fast heartbeat, chest pain, a painful, prolonged erection.

- Proscar, Propecia etc... all contain Finasteride - COMMON - Feeling like you might pass out, swelling in your hands or feet, pain in the testicles, impotence, loss of interest in sex, or trouble having an orgasm, abnormal ejaculation, swelling or tenderness in your breasts, dizziness, weakness, headache, runny nose, skin rash.

SERIOUS; hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you notice any breast lumps, pain, nipple discharge, or other breast changes. These may be signs of male breast cancer.

If you are using any of these drugs and have experienced ANY of these side effects, contact your doctor. If it commons under the SERIOUS OR LESS COMMON title, then seek urgent medical attention.

Okay, not something to look forward to ... but don't despair there are other ways which I talk about in my other articles.

Here's HOW LONG these prostate drugs take to reduce your symptoms;

Cardura, Flomax and Hytrin etc... results are meant to be noticed within 1-2 weeks.

Proscar and Propecia etc... It can take a long time for the drug to show improvement in symptoms - 6 months to a year for complete results.

General Information;

- Hytrin - designed as a long-term medication, studies have shown it to be more effective than Proscar, despite Proscar actually shrinking the prostate and it's more widely publicised use.

- Proscar and Propecia have the good side effect of promoting hair growth (on your head, not on your back)

- Hytrin, Cardura are also used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure)

- Cardura, Flomax and Hytrin etc... advise not to climb, stand up quickly or drive when starting out on your doses.

- Proscar, Propecia etc... can damage a male fetus if handled by a pregnant female.

Well that was your overview of man-made prostate drugs, in my following article entitled 'Your Prostate And Alternative Prostate Remedies - Are They All They're Cracked Up To Be?' you'll see the other side of the coin.

Early Diagnosis Is Critical For Effective Treatment of Mesothelioma by: David Arnold Livingston

Cancer is one of the most fatal diseases nowadays. It doesn’t choose its victims. Men and women alike, old and young die of cancer. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer that affects the mesothelium, specifically the Pleura (membrane that surrounds the lungs) and the Peritoneum (membrane surrounding the abdomen). Both Pleural Mesothelioma and Peritoneum Mesothelioma are primarily caused by the inhalation or exposure to asbestos, an incombustible fibrous mineral of impure magnesium silicate used in various industrial products. About 30 to 50 per cent of the total Mesothelioma cancer patients had not been exposed to asbestos, yet they have acquired the disease. Cancer specialists continue to study this rare kind of cancer so as to provide the public clear and exact information with regard to its cause, nature and cure.

Like many other forms of cancer, Mesothelioma has different stages. The earliest stage is still curable since only one layer of the pleura is affected. Surgery is the number one option for patients with Stage I Mesothelioma. The doctor removes the part of the lining of the lungs or chest (in case of Pleural Mesothelioma) and the lining of the abdomen (in case of Peritoneal Mesothelioma). In Stage II Mesothelioma, surgery can still be executed although some lymph nodes may have already been infected by the malignant Mesothelioma cancer cells. The diaphragm may also be removed; in severe cases, the Mesothelioma patient has to sacrifice one of his lungs.

Usually, surgery comes with systemic treatments, which include radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Through radiotherapy, Mesothelioma cancer cells are killed; however, only the cells in the treated area die. High energy rays used in radiotherapy or radiation therapy may either come from an external machine or from thin plastic tubes positioned into the tissues where Mesothelioma cancer-stricken cells are found. Inside the plastic tubes are radiation-emitting materials that kill the malignant cells. The use of an external machine is called external radiation therapy while the other is called internal radiation therapy. Also, a radioactive substance such as radiolabeled monoclonal antibody is circulated around the body during radiotherapy.

Chemotherapy is the use of anti-cancer drugs to kill the malignant cells. In treating Mesothelioma, the anti-cancer drugs are usually given to the patient through intravenous injection (within the vein). Oncologists are still studying the possibility of treating Mesothelioma through intracavitary chemotherapy (within the chest or abdomen). Some Mesothelioma patients also undergo Photodynamic therapy, a kind of cancer therapy that combines the use of drug (photosensitizer) with a specific kind of light. The photosensitizing agent when exposed to the light produce oxygen that destroys nearby malignant cancer cells. The drug is injected into the bloodstream and is absorbed by the cells.

In order to relieve the symptoms of Mesothelioma such as the pain in the chest or abdomen due to the build up of fluid, a physician drains the fluid by using a needle. The procedure is known as thoracentesis (removal of fluid in the chest) or paracentesis (removal of the fluid in the abdomen). To prevent further accumulation of the lubricating fluid in the membranes of the chest or abdomen, drugs are given through a tube in the affected organ.

Although the said treatments to Mesothelioma have been proven effective, chance of recovery and survival still depends on the size or extent of the cancer. Chances are higher when Mesothelioma is still in its early stages. Surgery is only advisable only up to the second stage of the Mesothelioma cancer wherein only one part or smaller portions of the membranes are affected. A patient diagnosed with stage IV Mesothelioma (diffuse Mesothelioma) has only about 4-24 months to live. Furthermore, the age of the patient and his general health condition is also crucial to his recovery. Older patients do not respond well to certain cancer treatments such as surgery because their tissues, organs and other body parts are more delicate.

10 Important Steps To Beat Your Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States and it is the second most common cause of cancer death in men over age 55. The incidence of prostate cancer increases dramatically with each decade after 50. Fortunately, prostate cancer tends to be slow-growing compared to many other cancers – the majority of prostate cancers either do not spread or cause any significant harm for decades.

In general, men run a 1-in-6 chance of developing prostate cancer at some point in their lives. More than 230,000 new cases are expected this year in the United States, with about 27,000 deaths.

Most men will choose conventional treatment, often surgery or radiation, but there are life-changing potential side effects they need to be aware of, and discuss with their doctors.

Surgery, called a prostatectomy for the surgical removal of the prostate gland, means impotence for about 75% of the men choosing this path, according to a September 2004 study published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Also, about 14% of the men were incontinent – could not control their bladder – five years after the operation.

With standard radiation therapy, the odds of impotence are about the same, 73%. The incontinence rate was much lower, just under 5%. There are new radiation therapies we discussed in the new guidebook How To Beat Your Prostate Cancer that have better outcomes.

No matter what conventional therapy a man chooses, if he does nothing else there is a 30% to 40% chance that his cancer or another cancer will recur. That’s because his immune system was not strong enough to protect him from the first cancer, and if he does nothing it will be no stronger the next time it is needed. In addition, radiation and chemotherapy depress the immune system, leaving it weaker than it was before you got treatment. Finally, any cancerous cells that survive the radiation and chemotherapy treatments, or escape the surgeon’s knife – and a few ALWAYS do – must be cleaned up by the immune system. Yet those cells that survived radiation or chemotherapy are, by definition, the strongest mutant cells. Cells that survive chemotherapy even have their own name: Multi-drug resistant. All of this means that if a man’s cancer recurs, the cure rates the second time around are much, much lower – on the order of 5% survival.

So even if a man chooses conventional treatment, the information and advice on alternative treatments in How To Beat Your Prostate Cancer is very important for his recovery and continued good health.

Here are 5 of the 10 important steps covered in a Free Report by the authors of How To Beat Your Prostate Cancer that have worked for others:

1. Pick a doctor carefully. The numbers above on impotence and incontinence are pretty scary. Top surgeons who perform hundreds of these operations tend to have better numbers, and you should ALWAYS get the statistics in advance from any doctor before you let them treat you. Remember that if you are talking to a surgeon, he probably will want to operate. If your doctor is a radiation oncologist, don’t be surprised if he pushes radiation. A clinical oncologist might counsel chemotherapy. Always consider the source. If you want to try alternative therapy first, since you really are not pressed for time, choose an alternative doctor or health care practitioner just as carefully.

2. Boost your immune system. If you’re going to undergo conventional treatment, you need to boost your immune system to deal with the impact of chemotherapy and radiation. You also need to clean up the remaining cells after therapy, and then build back your immune system so cancer does not recur. If you are going to pursue an alternative treatment path while you have the time, boosting your immune system is Job #1. Several chapters in How To Beat Your Prostate Cancer show you how to do that.

3. Alkalize your internal environment. Cancer cells are highly acidic, and cancer can’t live in an alkaline environment. You can test your pH level with test strips from the pharmacy or health food store. It should be over 7.0, preferably in the 7.2 to 7.4 range. If your internal body environment is acidic, it makes it much easier for cancer to grow and metastasize. Prostate cancer often metastasizes to the bones, making it much harder to beat.

4. Get more oxygen to your cells. Cancer hates oxygen. In the lab, when they are doing an experiment where they want cancerous cells to grow quickly, they simply turn down the oxygen. When they want to stabilize the experiment, they turn the oxygen back up. The same is true of your body.

5. Take vitamins and supplements. If you eat the Standard American Diet, you are eating fruits and vegetables grown on depleted soil, picked too early so they won’t ripen and spoil while they’re in the distribution chain, and then probably overcooked. Even if you are eating organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed pastured meat and raw milk, you still can’t get the massive amounts of vitamins and supplements you need to let your immune system overcome a cancerous tumor that has become established. You must take high-quality vitamins and minerals, digestive enzymes and specific anti-cancer supplements like those recommended in Chapter 7 of How To Beat Your Prostate Cancer.

Ovarian Cancer Treatment

Ovarian cancer, a condition characterized by an overgrowth of malignant cells in one or both of the ovaries, is one of the deadliest and under-recognized cancers affecting women. Every year, there are more than 25,000 women that suffer from this deadly disease. Half of them are most likely to die within a period of five years.

Early Detection: Improves Ovarian Cancer Treatment

The sad thing about ovarian cancer is that during the early stage, there are usually no signs and symptoms that tell you about this disorder. Symptoms start to show up when the cancer is already widespread, making ovarian cancer treatment too difficult.

However, there are women who are lucky enough to detect the symptoms early on; hence, diagnosis is hastened up and ovarian cancer treatment is given immediately. Tests such as pelvic and rectal screening, ultrasound, x-ray and laparoscopy may help a doctor detect tumors in the ovaries.

At present, almost 75 percent of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer are not treated immediately due to late detection of the cancer. Experts say that when detection of the cancer is made early and when ovarian cancer treatment is given immediately, women diagnosed with the disease have 90% survival rate since the cancer can be easily treated in its early stage.

Diagnosis and Ovarian Cancer Treatment

When symptoms finally show up and the doctor suspects that a patient may have ovarian cancer, laparoscopy is conducted to confirm diagnosis. It is a direct visual examination of the abdominal cavity, the ovaries, the exterior of the fallopian tubes and the uterus using an instrument that is inserted just underneath the navel.

Upon confirmation of ovarian cancer, the doctor explores the extent of the cancer and submits the patient for surgery. The surgeon removes the growth or much of the malignant tissue. In most cases, the whole ovary or both of the ovaries and the fallopian tubes are removed as they the malignant cancer cells have already affected these areas. This kind of surgery is called salpingooophorectomy. If the malignant cells affect the uterus, hysterectomy is conducted (surgical removal of the uterus).

Surgery is usually ensued by radiotherapy, which is the use of high energy radiation to destroy malignant cancer cells in the body and shrink remaining tumors, which may later on become malignant. This procedure may be done using an external machine or a radioactive material put inside the body near the malignant cells.

The patient also undergoes chemotherapy, whereby the patient is given anti-cancer drugs to help hasten up ovarian cancer treatment. Drugs may be administered orally (through the mouth), intravenously (through the veins) or through the muscles (by means of injection of a needle.

Most anticancer drugs given to the patient have chemical compounds that are toxic to the malignant cells; thus, growth of the cancer cells is reduced or stopped. These anticancer drugs are called cytotoxic drugs. Other anticancer drugs used are synthetic forms of sex hormones such as androgen drugs and progesterone drugs.

In most instances, different kinds of anticancer drugs are prescribed in combination in order to speed up ovarian cancer treatment. However, not all ovarian cancer patients are given with the same anticancer drugs. The drugs given to a patient depends on the extent or stage of development of the ovarian cancer and her general health condition.

Your Guide on Holistic Healing

More and more people are using holistic healing as either a supplementary method or their main technique of health care. Holistic healing uses all aspects of the individual to treat illness. It is a combination of body, mind and spirit. It takes all things into consideration such as the patient's diet, their environment, their lifestyle, social outlets, spiritual health and of course their physical health. All the aspects of their life create the disease or illness, not just an isolated part.

Today, many new research studies indicate that this is true. Claims of a diet of red and purple fruits and vegetables as a cure for colon cancer caught the ears of researchers at Ohio State, primarily because it worked. Today they found the reason, anthocyanins. They isolated the active ingredient in blueberries and grapes and now attempt to duplicate it in a drug for cancer. The holistic doctor, of course, would recommend eating the vegetables and fruit instead.

Many holistic cures are "chicken soup cures". Like chicken soup for a cold, they make you feel better and do no harm for your body. Until recently physicians thought that chicken soup made you feel better because it's one of the many comfort foods, but instead found that there's something in the fat in the broth that actually helps you heal. Other types of non-invasive holistic treatments involve traditional Chinese medicine, herbology, chiropracty, reiki, the healing touch, reflexology, acupressure, massage therapy, yoga and breathing exercises to name but a few.

Unlike some of the invasive surgery or toxic medication, most won't hurt you. I use the term most because herbology and Chinese medicine, while normally safe, also uses some toxic herbs. Foxglove, a plant that Indians used for heart conditions is the plant digitalis purpurea. This plant from herbal remedies of the American Indian gave us the drug Digitalis, a toxic medication if used improperly. Many of the herbs and treatments found in both Chinese medicine and herbology are now getting a second look by scientists and physicians. Herbs contain a vast amount of additional nutrition compared to their weight and some feel that this may be why they work. Like Digitalis, herbs also are the basis for many drugs on the market today.

The massage therapy, reiki, yoga and even breathing exercises are for the body as well tapping into pent up spiritual issues. Massage therapists tell that they not only stimulate the flow of blood to injured areas, they unlock the stress that's trapped in the tight muscles and allow it to flow out. Stress from anger, disappointment and fear all gathers in the body and if not released causes disease. Studies now prove that stress causes the body to weaken and illness to settle in the body.

The body is a beautiful instrument that heals itself. The body maintains itself if we work with it, feed it properly, appreciate and exercise it. Yoga and breathing exercises work to improve the circulation of the body and increase the healing oxygen intake. More doctors are recommending yoga classes as a form of maintaining limberness, relieving the pain of arthritis and overcoming other problems such as back pain.

Creative visualization, once thought as something for people that wore tin foil hats and practiced strange beliefs, now is part of the supplemental treatment for cancer and other diseases. Doctors found that this simple tool increases the speed of recovery and increases the effectiveness of treatment.

Holistic medicine isn't one theory; it's a combination of different techniques that looks at the whole person using as many as necessary to make them well again, often with no drugs or invasive procedures.

First Date Mistakes By Men by: Jason King

If you can stay away from these first date mistakes by men you should make it to date number two. You're going to have to show your date that you're confident, and give a good impression with looking arrogant. The way you dress, what you talk about and your table manners are going to be under close scrutiny.

First off you need to decide where to eat. This is going to be up to you, so you have to get it right. Get this wrong and it will spoil everything right from the start of your date. Places to avoid are definitely fast food outlets. This will not go down well at all, and you'll be lucky if you're still on the date before you finish your food. At the other end of the scale you don't want to take a lady on a first date to a fancy restaurant that is way out of your price range. For one she'll think you've gone over the top, and two, you will be choosing all the cheapest items on the menu. You want a nice restaurant that is comfortable, serves good food and one where you can relax, and not worry about the cost of the meal. It will be even more beneficial for you if you know the restaurant you're going to. You can order your meal straight away, and make your own recommendations. Not knowing what you're going to eat when you sit and study the menu for ten minutes will not be attractive.

You will need to dress to impress. You don't want to turn up at a nice restaurant and look like you should be eating in a burger bar. Most women will go out and buy something new just to look good for you so you need to make an effort. A shirt, nice pants and polished shoes will be just right for the occasion. Back this up with immaculate personal hygiene like washed hair, no stubble and clean hands and nails. All this things will be looked at in the first 2 minutes of you meeting. Get this part right and your still heading for a good first date.

Showing that you're not listening can be very aggravating. She will notice if your eyes are wondering around while she is talking to you. You need to show you are listening all the time. Throw in the odd question so she knows you're paying attention. Never look at another women while you're on your date especially the waitress. This will not look good for you. You need to put the blinkers on for the night, and ignore what's going on around you.

Some things are best kept to yourself on your first date. In fact some of them can wait a few months before you start being too honest. Conversations to avoid are ex girlfriends, any criminal offenses no matter how minor, medications you might be taking and generally anything that isn't going to sound good on a first date. She will have things that will be kept a secret as well in the early days, and that's the way they should stay.

There are many more mistakes you could make on a first date but if you avoid these ones you should have some idea of what's not acceptable behaviour.

New Class of Drugs Brings Hope to Cancer Patients by: ARA Content

(ARA) - This is an exciting time in cancer research. Recent information on angiogenesis -- the growth of new blood vessels -- is providing researchers opportunities to find new ways to slow or stop a tumor's growth by cutting off the blood supply it needs.

Angiogenesis performs a critical role in the development of cancer. To grow, solid tumors need oxygen and nutrients provided by new blood vessels. Once a vascular network has been generated, cancer cells can also invade the rest of the body, a process called metastasis. Currently, researchers believe that more than 90 percent of all cancer cases are angiogenesis-dependent.

The good news is that a novel class of drugs, which acts as angiogenesis inhibitors, shows great potential in fighting more than 20 different diseases, including many types of cancer.

These "anti-angiogenesis" drugs being developed and tested block the formation of new blood vessels, starving cancerous cells and stopping tumor growth. One drug being tested, Neovastat, was discovered in 1994 and is derived from cartilage tissue. Neovastat is the only angiogenesis inhibitor being developed in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical universe that has four mechanisms of action to combat blood vessel growth. Furthermore, Neovastat is taken orally, making it convenient for patients who need long-term treatment, and it has shown minimal side effects in clinical trials. This means that unlike standard chemotherapy, Neovastat is not likely to interfere with a patient's immune system, or cause adverse gastrointestinal symptoms or hair loss.

In addition, because most cancer cells are genetically unstable and more prone to mutations, resistance is a major problem with many chemotherapy agents. But since anti-angiogenesis drugs target normal endothelial cells that are not genetically unstable, drug resistance is less likely to develop and has not been a problem so far in clinical trials.

Another hope is that angiogenesis inhibitors can be used in combination with therapies that directly target tumor cells. Because anti-angiogenic drugs and chemotherapy are aimed at different cellular targets, it is possible that the combination will prove even more effective than either therapy is as a stand-alone.

Currently, Neovastat is the subject of three clinical trials, targeting three forms of cancer for which there are urgent needs for new therapies. For multiple myeloma, the second most common form of blood cancer, the drug is in phase two trials with 125 patients in the United States, Canada and Europe. This trial should be completed by the end of 2002. For progressive renal cell carcinoma, the drug is in phase three trials with 280 patients in the United States, Canada and Europe, which should be completed in early 2003. For non-small cell lung cancer, Neovastat is in a phase three trial sponsored by the National Cancer Institute with 760 patients in the United States and Canada. This trial should be completed in 2005.

Once the clinical trials are complete, health authorities in various countries can then assess test results and make decisions on approval.

Neovastat is being developed by Aeterna Laboratories of Quebec, Canada. For more information about current trials, call (888) 349-3232. If you are an oncologist, contact Claude Hariton, PhD, vice president of Clinical and Regulatory Affairs, (418) 652-8525, Ext. 306.
